Event Sustainability
Sustainability remains centred in everything we do at the Bath Christmas Market. Since Bath and North-East Somerset declared a climate emergency in 2019, our team have responded by consistently implementing sustainable practices within every stage of the market, considering it as a crucial element throughout the planning and delivery of the event itself.
Our Mission
As an environmentally conscious organisation, we are committed to minimising our ecological footprint whilst providing our visitors with the most unforgettable, magical experience. Our team have conducted a Sustainability Assessment Check (SAC), which raises questions to maximise awareness of the sustainability requirements.
Our aims are to:
- - Remove the use of fossil fuel on site and promote sustainable energy solutions
- - Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption & promoting sustainable transport
- - Maximise the prevention of landfill waste whilst promote recycling of waste and resources
- - Improve our water management
- - Avoid any harm to nature in green spaces
- - Minimise the reliance on imported products and their effect on habitats
- - Improve physical and mental health and wellbeing of both staff and visitors
- - Work with suppliers and contractors to make sure they uphold these aims
Action
Our team are currently taking steps to phase out single use signage, reduce our carbon footprint emissions and implement all recycled materials where possible. Throughout our planning process we are following four crucial steps:
- Identify opportunities to improve sustainability
- Develop ideas and solutions which have tangible outcomes
- Review outcomes and make recommends
- Monitor and record progress in real time
In 2022 we requested that all decorations and installations to be reusable, these can be upcycled for other uses if not used again in years to come.
Our Partnership
At the Christmas Market we collaborate with our green partners to ensure we are upholding our environmental commitments. Our contracted power provider ‘Templine’, support us in providing viable temporary power for the event. As of 2025 the event we no longer rely on generators and will be entirely run off mains power within the city.
We practice significant energy efficiency by incorporating low-consumption LED fixtures throughout the Christmas Market.
We request contractor vehicles to comply with Bath CAZ standards.
We also ensure the recycling of all waste oil, fuel and air filters, and adhere to the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive, along with recycling all blown lamps of all kinds.
Sustainable Stalls
When selecting our stallholders, we consider sustainability as a key element within our decision-making process. Whilst balancing a ratio of stalls for all needs, we ensure products are ethically produced and hand-made where possible.
Each year we request that our stallholders reflect on their own sustainability practices, we encourage the re-use of decorations for their chalet’s year-on-year. Many stallholders do this - some simply adding and upgrading existing decorations.
